Have you ever wondered who those signs in Vietnamese hotel rooms are meant for? It’s not hard to guess – the primary language is Chinese. Yes, it’s the tourists from China who have to be repeatedly reminded that smoking, littering, making noise, and even spitting are not allowed in the rooms. Surprisingly, spitting on walls and floors is a favorite pastime of some Chinese tourists, and they consider it normal.
Despite the efforts of the Vietnamese to enforce rules, the Chinese tourists often do as they please. Smoking in the room is a classic example. It seems more like an issue of imperial thinking towards smaller Southeast Asian countries: “I can do whatever I want; I’m Chinese.”
Of course, not all Chinese tourists are like this, but there are many uncivilized individuals among them. As you can see, there is evidence of this in the form of signs reminding them of proper behavior.
